Tax on dividends

The March 1993 Budget affected the way in which dividend tax credits are treated for UK taxpayers as follows:

  • For basic rate (25 per cent) taxpayers, the changes should have no effect.

  • Lower rate (20 per cent) taxpayers will no longer be able to claim any part of the tax credit attached to their dividends paid after 5 April 1993.

  • Higher rate (40 per cent) taxpayers will be liable to the Inland Revenue for a further 20 per cent (previously 15 per cent) tax on the total of the dividend paid and the tax credit from 6 April 1993.

  • Non taxpayers will still be able to claim the tax credit attached to their dividend.
